Weekend Pediatric Care: Now on Your Phone

sick child with fever and mom on phone visitIt’s Saturday night and your preschooler has been running a fever and refuses to eat. The pediatrician’s office is closed. While she’s sick and feels miserable, you don’t think it requires a trip to the emergency room. Sitting in a long line at an urgent care seems like the perfect setup to make her feel even worse.

Try a Virtual Visit

More and more parents today are turning to virtual doctor visits via phone or video when they can’t see their child’s regular doctor. It’s affordable, and you don’t even have to leave home. All you need to get started is a smartphone.

How Does It Work?

Health systems that offer virtual visits typically have an easy-to-follow process. Steps to getting started usually include:

  1. Complete an easy online registration that gathers basic information and the child’s medical history. Often, you can register at any time, even before you actually need a doctor. Having this step finished can save you time when your child is sick.
  2. Request a consultation and designate if you would like to consult with the doctor by phone or video. Consultations are usually available 24/7, every day of the year. Typically, a doctor is available within 15 or 20 minutes of requesting the consultation.
  3. Just like an in-person visit, a doctor will talk with you by phone or video and ask questions about your child’s symptoms. During a video consult, the doctor can actually look at your child and talk to them on screen. This can be helpful for older children who may be able to help answer questions about their symptoms.
  4. The physician will recommend treatment based on your child’s specific symptoms and health history. If a prescription is necessary, it can be sent to the pharmacy of your choice. You’ll also have a chance to ask questions.
  5. You will receive a follow-up email to make sure your child received the care they needed. Information about the visit can also be sent to your child’s primary care physician.
